|Thomas Long - Hand Blown Glass Artist|
Thomas Long began blowing glass in 1988, while working toward a degree in ceramics. After dabbling for several years, he found the attraction irresistible, and became addicted to the physicality, the choreography, and the immediacy of the process. What keeps him working with glass is the fluidity of the material and the inherent element of danger in the process.
His work is an expression of that fluidity and spontaneity. The color patterning is eye-popping, taking full advantage of the translucency of glass and it’s ability to boost color with light, evoking the reflective qualities of water. Thomas Long opened his first full time studio Creative Studios, Inc, in St. Augustine, Florida in 2001. From 2001 to 2005 thousands of visitors observed the ancient glassblowing techniques brought to life by Thomas, his assistants and visiting glassblowers. It was one of the top tour stops in St. Augustine. In winter of 2005, Thomas decided to move into a larger glass studio with metal fabrication capability and a gallery space. In this new space he has been able to spend more time developing his art installations on a larger scale. Paul Braun, stone sculptor also works out of the studio in West St. Augustine.
Thomas lives in St. Augustine with his wife Jessica. Thomas has three children who are accomplished in their own right in glass art from the studio. In his career and studies, he has had the opportunity to study under and or work for: Paul Marioni, Steve Edwards, Karla Trinkley, William Dexter, Michael Meilahn, Rob Levin, Kenny Carter, John Clark and Hank Adams.
